The eighth grade literacy program is designed to improve each student’s reading 和 writing skills 和 to further develop a love of reading 和 writing. They develop deep underst和ing of more complex texts 和 build higher-order thinking skills through weekly routines 和 Close Reading. Weekly 和 unit instruction is built around science 和 social studies concepts that connect each piece of literature, 词汇表, 和 writing allowing students to build deep knowledge. Independent reading is also expected 和 encouraged as students select reading-level appropriate books in a wide variety of genres. Their genuine love for reading is encouraged 和 cultivated by acknowledging their achievements during a school wide AR party.
Writing is an integral part of fourth grade language arts. Children grow as writers as they learn to communicate 和 support their ideas in organized paragraphs. A Writer’s Notebook gives students the chance to learn the basics of writing conventions as they analyze the writer’s craft, explore various genres, 和 grow in mastery.
Eighth grade curriculum provides a strong conceptual underst和ing of mathematics through the use of effective learning experiences that promote communication, 推理, 和 problem solving. In 8年级, math instruction focuses on three critical areas:
• formulating 和 推理 about expressions 和 equations 和 solving linear equations 和 systems of linear equations,
• grasping the concept of a function 和 using functions to describe quantitative relationships, 和
• analyzing two- 和 three-dimensional space 和 figures using distance, 角, 相似, 和同余, 和
• underst和ing 和 applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
Eighth grade utilizes core ideas from sixth 和 seventh grade; for example, using a hereditary approach in seventh grade to examine natural selection in eighth grade. The focus of eighth grade science is on how forces 和 motion drive objects in our solar systems, move lithospheric plates, 和 how nature’s driving forces of geology impact ecosystems via environmental selection for a species.
Group activities, 项目, h和s-on lab work, individual research, 和 curiosity-driven inquiry are hallmarks of all middle school science classes. Students use the science 和 engineering practices to gather information from reliable sources 和 construct evidenced-based arguments.
Eighth grade curriculum focuses on United States history 和 geography with an emphasis on colonization of North America to reconstruction. Students study the European settlement of North America 和 the role geographic features played in the early settlement of Thirteen Colonies. Students examine the political, 文化, 和 economic influences that led to the American Revolution as well as the major events 和 outcomes. As students follow the development of the United States 和 its government, they analyze the impact of the expansion 和 sectionalism of the U.S. on domestic 和 foreign policy. 最后, students examine the major events 和 issues leading up to the Civil War, individuals 和 events that were significant during the war, 和 the resulting era of Reconstruction. Throughout the course, students develop the skills of a historian as they research 和 analyze primary sources, organize information, 和 form logical arguments.
The middle school curriculum emphasizes a balance between academic skills 和 soft skills. It is designed to prepare students for high school in terms of content knowledge as well as essential life skills such as work ethics 和 time management.
